Name: LL.M. degree in Public Service Law

Institution: New York University School of Law

Name of the project: The Global Public Service Law Project

Short description:

The Global Public Service Law Project was created to increase awareness and understanding of the variety of public interest lawyering done in different contexts around the world. The Project brings activist lawyers from the developing and transitional world to interact not only with the New York University School of Law community but also with American public interest lawyers and institutions. The Project has also dramatically increased opportunities for J.D. students interested in studying and pursuing public interest work overseas.

The Global Public Service Law Project defines public service broadly to include such areas as:

  • The provision of legal services to under-served groups and individuals
  • Human rights and labor advocacy and organizing
  • Civil society and institution building
  • Protection of the environment, the rights of women, indigenous peoples, and minorities
  • Government work, such as criminal prosecution or defense

The Global Public Service Law Project is comprised of an innovative LL.M. in Public Service Law, a post-graduate fellowship program for LL.M. students, an expanded international summer internship program for J.D. students, a seminar entitled, "Global Public Service Lawyering: Theory and Practice" and additional courses aimed at activist lawyering from a global perspective
